New SEC commissioner may be great news for cryptocurrencies.
A Donald Trump appointment to the American SEC may have opened the door to a key cryptocurrency decision.
Recent volatility in the price of cryptocurrencies can in part be put down to the ongoing deliberations of American’s Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC has been ruling on whether to approve a Bitcoin-backed exchange-traded fund (ETF), a move that would be a notable step forward in the perception of crypto.
Now, American President Donald Trump’s pick as the new SEC Commissioner may have just opened the way for those ETFs to get their approval.
Elad Roisman has been approved by the US Senate to be the new commissioner, and will join a committee that includes another crypto-friendly face, Hester Peirce.
Roisman has already made noises that he’s intending to take a look at ICOs and that he fully understands the need for the SEC treating them fairly. His appointment to the commission now appears to tip the balance in favour of pro-cryptocurrency representatives. The commission has five members and one of them, Kara Stein, set to end their term this December. Thus, another appointment is imminent too.
